In episode 2.1, we spent time discussing the holidays, and more specifically, the highly curious meaning behind ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside.’ I mean, geeze, have you READ the lyrics to that song? It hardly seems like the playful, innocent holiday tune that we have made it out to be. In fact, it’s pretty terrifying when you really break it down.
Seriously, check out this part of of the first verse:
So really I’d better scurry (Beautiful please don’t hurry)
But maybe just a half a drink more (Put some records on while I pour)
The neighbors might think (Baby, it’s bad out there)
Say what’s in this drink? (No cabs to be had out there)
I wish I knew how (Your eyes are like starlight now)
To break this spell (I’ll take your hat, your hair looks swell)
You don’t even have to read any more to see that something isn’t right. But what the heck do we know? We are just 3 dads & a lad spewing ignorance with authority, except that very recently, a couple from Minnesota, Lydia Liza & John Lemanski, began pondering the exact same thing. And because they are immensely more talented than our team, they rewrote the song to reflect mutual consent about the direction of the evening mentioned in it. In fact, the song was so popular, that a non-profit record label signed them to a recording deal. The song was professionally recorded and will be released on December 16th. But they didn’t stop being awesome there; they are also donating 100% of the proceeds of the song to charities that help victims of sexual assault! How cool is that?! You can find out more HERE!
We want to know what YOU think? Is ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’ inappropriate, or are we just making something out of nothing here? Let us know in the comment section! We would also love for you to share any other crazy inappropriate holiday things such as songs, traditions, etc. that YOU think are just too much.
